U.S. Government Provides $6 Million to Strengthen Community Radio Services in Mozambique

April 27, 2021 – The U.S. Embassy in Mozambique announces a $6 million, five-year program to strengthen the capacity of community radios, supporting their ability to inform the public and contribute to the development of Mozambique.  The program, known as USAID Community Radio Assistance for Greater Empowerment of Mozambican Institutions (USAID CORAGEM), will support approximately 60 Mozambican community radios in Zambézia, Nampula, Niassa, and Cabo Delgado.

Recent research indicates that approximately two-thirds of Mozambicans, particularly those in rural communities, receive their information through community radios. USAID CORAGEM, implemented by Mozambican communications organization Associação h2n and partners, will strengthen the radio sector by supporting training in journalism skills, ethics, and financial and organizational management for community radio journalists. USAID CORAGEM will also help these radio stations to increase community engagement, with a specific focus on youth.

U.S. Ambassador to Mozambique Dennis W. Hearne stressed the importance of a strong media sector to Mozambique’s future, saying, “Community radio is essential to inclusive progress in Mozambique.  U.S. government support will help community radios reach more people, in more places, with more accurate and relevant information that will help citizens make informed decisions.”

USAID’s programming to strengthen the media sector represents a critical component of broader U.S. Government assistance in Mozambique, promoting inclusive growth and encouraging greater government transparency and accountability.  In close collaboration with the Government of Mozambique, the U.S. Government provides more than $500 million in annual assistance to improve the quality of education and healthcare, promote economic prosperity, and support the overall development of the nation.

The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) leads the U.S. Government’s international development and disaster assistance through partnerships and investments that save lives, reduce poverty, strengthen democratic governance, and help people emerge from humanitarian crises.  For more information about USAID work to foster sustainable development and advance human dignity visit www.usaid.gov
