The Embassy of the United States has made an official disaster declaration in response to the recent cyclone in Mozambique.
The disaster declaration, established last week, is the first step which enables USAID’s Office of U.S. Foreign Disaster Assistance to provide monetary and humanitarian assistance in response to a disaster.
Since March of 2016, in response to the drought and now the cyclone the United States has provided more than $42 million in disaster relief funding to Mozambique. Much of this funding has gone to improved water access and food distribution services in seven provinces.
The U.S. Embassy is working with the Government of Mozambique to assess the assistance needed, in particular in Inhambane and Gaza, in response to the cyclone and to provide funding and other support.
