The U.S. Ambassador Dean Pittman welcomes Dr. Jennifer Adams as Mission Director to USAID Mozambique

August 14, 2017 – Dr. Jennifer Adams was sworn-in Thursday, August 10, 2017 as the U.S. Agency for International Development’s (USAID) Mission Director for Mozambique. In this capacity she will oversee USAID’s $257 million development assistance portfolio in Mozambique.

As the USAID Mission Director, Dr. Adams will be responsible for partnering with the Government of Mozambique, other donors, non-government organizations and the private sector to improve the quality of life for all Mozambicans, particularly the poor, underserved, and marginalized. In Mozambique, she will support programs that help control the HIV epidemic and prevent maternal and child deaths, accelerate broad-based economic growth, increase education quality and strengthen democratic governance.

Throughout her more than twenty year career with USAID, Dr. Adams has worked in the Central Asian Republics, Senegal, Brazil, and Washington, D.C.  Previously she headed the USAID Office of Donor Engagement and in 2008, Dr. Adams was appointed the first USAID development counselor to China.  Before Beijing, Dr. Adams was the Mission Director in Brazil where she initiated a successful public-private partnership, Mais Unidos, which engaged the 50 largest American companies to support social entrepreneurship.

Prior to being named the Mission Director in Mozambique, Dr. Adams was the Acting Assistant Administrator for USAID’s Bureau for Global Health, where she managed the Office of Population and Reproductive Health, Office of HIV/AIDS, Office of Health Systems and other special assignments.

A graduate of Johns Hopkins University, Dr. Adams has a Master of Philosophy degree from the Institute of Development Studies at the University of Sussex and a Ph.D. in Economics from Cambridge University.
