PRESS RELEASE

Strengthening Health Institutions – U.S. Government Signs Financing Agreement with Tete Provincial Health Directorate

April 18, 2019 – Tete – The United States Government, through the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), signed yesterday a $650,000 direct financing agreement with the Tete Provincial Health Directorate (DPS Tete).  The USAID Mozambique Mission Director, Dr. Jennifer Adams, represented the U.S. Government, while the Tete Provincial Health Director, Dra. Carla Mosse, represented the Government of the Republic of Mozambique.  This agreement will improve the delivery of health services in Tete, specifically for people living with HIV.

There are more Mozambicans on HIV treatment than ever before, and each day the health system provides services to more families impacted by the disease.  Tete Province has one of the lowest HIV prevalence rates in the country, and has improved its ability to ensure that people with HIV/AIDS have access to adequate services.

During the signing ceremony, Dr. Adams underscored the importance of improving the delivery of HIV services so that those who are HIV positive stay on treatment.  “Fifteen years ago, HIV/AIDS was seen as a deadly disease.  Today, we know that once you know your status and stay on treatment, you can live a long, healthy, and productive life.”

The agreement signed yesterday represents a new chapter of a long-standing partnership between the American and Mozambican governments and will result in more effective and efficient health service delivery in Tete Province.  Specifically, the activities outlined in the agreement will support Tete Province’s capacity to directly implement HIV/AIDS programming related to prevention, care and treatment, with a more robust focus on improved monitoring so that services better respond to patient needs.
