Mozambique Receives 384,000 COVID-19 Vaccines Under the COVAX Facility

March 8, 2021 – The Government of Mozambique received 384,000 COVID-19 vaccines today, the first of a total of 2,064,000 from the global COVAX Initiative. President Biden announced $4 billion to support the international vaccine facility COVAX, which facilitates global access to COVID-19 vaccines.

U.S. Ambassador to Mozambique Dennis W. Hearne joined Prime Minister of Mozambique Carlos Agostinho de Rosário, ambassadors from other donor countries, and health officials at the Maputo International Airport to receive the vaccines.

The U.S. Government’s COVID-19 assistance supports the Government of Mozambique’s efforts to provide quality healthcare to all Mozambicans and represents a critical component of broader U.S. Government assistance. The U.S. Government has donated 50 ventilators to the Ministry of Health, contributed $3.7 million to help guarantee Mozambique’s vaccine readiness per COVAX requirements, and invested more than $20.4 million in training, supplies, and equipment to support Mozambique’s overallCOVID-19 response.

In close collaboration with the Government of Mozambique, the U.S. Government provides more than $500 million in annual assistance to improve the quality of education and healthcare, promote economic prosperity, and support the overall development of the nation.
