The Process of adoption in Mozambique

Who is eligible to adopt a child in Mozambique?

  • Adults between 25-50 years of age.  Prospective parents must be at least 18 years older than the prospective child(ren). 
  • Foreigners with strong ties to Mozambique 
  • One member of a same sex couple.  Mozambican law does not officially recognize same sex marriage.

What makes a child eligible for adoption in Mozambique?

A child considered to be totally abandoned and it is impossible to find a relative to take guardianship.

What is the average processing time for adoption in Mozambique?

The adoption process often lasts 12 months and occurs in two phases.  The first phase covers the judicial/legal portion of the process and the second is dedicated to the interim integration of the child with the adoptive parent(s).

Important aspects to consider.

  • Adoptions are irrevocable.
  • Adoptive parents are required to provide bi-annual well-being checks for adoptive children until the age of 21. 
  • Any movements with the child, domestic or international, require prior notification and coordination with Acção Social must occur to coordinate well-being checks for eligible children.  The nearest Mozambican embassy or consulate is the point of contact for well-being checks while oversees.
