The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) established an office in Mozambique in 2000.  CDC’s work here focuses mainly on HIV/AIDS prevention, care and treatment, and is funded through the President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR.)  CDC’s highly trained staff collaborates closely with Mozambique’s Ministry of Health (MOH), local universities and other governmental and non-governmental partners to support them in improving public health policies, services and capacity.  CDC employees also serve as technical advisors regarding a variety of health issues beyond HIV, including malaria (through the President’s Malaria Initiative), outbreak response and disease surveillance.

Peace Corps Mozambique’s programs have been in place since 1998 and presently include approximately 200 Volunteers working in all 11 provinces in Mozambique. Working at the grassroots level, Volunteers serve for a period of 2 years and develop relationships with Mozambicans, promoting peace and friendship, and a better understanding between Mozambicans and Americans, and providing technical assistance in two major sectors: Education and Health.

The Education Sector has approximately 120 Volunteers who teach English, Math and Sciences at Secondary Schools and Primary School Teacher Training Institutes. The Health Sector includes approximately 80 Volunteers working in HIV/AIDS prevention and care activities, malaria prevention and education, and capacity building and organizational development.  Volunteers also work with youth groups in a variety of settings and activities, including leadership development, health and gender awareness, arts and music, theater and English language strengthening.

Through U.S. President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR), the United States works in partnership with local governments to help save the lives of those suffering from HIV/AIDS around the world.

The U.S. government’s HIV work in Mozambique, through the PEPFAR program, began in 2004, and Mozambique is one of 22 countries in Africa receiving PEFPAR support.  Mozambique is also one of three countries in Africa that participates in the Gender Based Violence (GBV) Initiative with additional funding to support GBV prevention and availability and quality of GBV services.  The Government of Mozambique and the Government of the United States sign a Partnership Framework which provides five-year joint strategic plans for cooperation between the two countries to respond to the HIV epidemic. The strategic framework outlines joint priorities and key policy issues to address the epidemic in Mozambique and describes Mozambican and American commitments to achieve these strategic priorities.

The Public Affairs Section of the U.S. Embassy in Maputo undertakes informational, cultural, and educational activities designed to promote understanding of U.S. foreign policy and American society and values. It acts as the public affairs arm of the U.S. Embassy in Maputo, interacting with Mozambican and international media.  Cultural and educational programs of the section place special emphasis on democracy, human rights, health, and economic issues. The Public Affairs Office also operates the Martin Luther King, Jr.,  American Cultural Center in Maputo.

The Political and Economic Section of the U.S. Embassy in Maputo is responsible for a broad range of political and economic policy issues in Mozambique. In coordination with other U.S. Government agencies and under the guidance of the U.S. Ambassador to Mozambique, the Political and Economic Section covers the following responsibilities serves as liaison or point of contact with a wide range of economic and political actors in Mozambique; promotes U.S. policy by working with Mozambican ministries and agencies, as well as other diplomatic missions assigned to Mozambique; and drafts analytical reports on economic, political and social developments in Mozambique.

The U.S. Commercial Service is part of the Department of Commerce International Trade Administration, the official trade promotion agency of the U.S. Government. U.S. Commercial Service trade professionals in over 100 U.S. cities and more than 75 countries help U.S. companies get started in exporting or increase sales to new global markets. The United States Defense Attaché Office (USDAO) represents the Departments of Defense (DoD), Army, Navy, and Air Force. As official representatives of the Secretary of Defense, the Chairman – Joint Chiefs of Staff, the Military Service Secretaries, and Service Chiefs of Staff, USDAO Maputo is responsible for managing military relationships, coordinating military exchanges between the U.S. and Mozambique, and keeping the DoD informed on U.S./Mozambican military relations.

Current ongoing activities include the President’s Emergency Plan for Aids Relief (PEPFAR), the African Contingency Operations Training and Assistance (ACOTA) program, and other various Security Assistance and training programs.  USDAO Maputo manages the International Military Education Training (IMET) Program in Mozambique, which sends select officers back to the United States for advanced training on a wide variety of subjects.

USAID, the United States Agency for International Development, is the development arm of the United States Government.  In Mozambique USAID works in agriculture and food security; democracy, human rights, and governance; economic growth and trade; education; environment; and global health.
